Best focused Mac sidebar

ChatGPT Search
Useful, official, and often confused with a page-aware Safari sidebar.
OpenAI's ChatGPT app includes a Safari Search extension for iPhone and iPad. Enable it and searches typed into Safari's address bar can go to ChatGPT Search instead of the usual search engine.
It does not do the same job as a Mac sidebar. It changes where a search goes. It is not designed to sit beside an arbitrary Safari page, hold a page-specific conversation, or act on that page.
Choose it if: you want ChatGPT to handle searches from Safari on your iPhone or iPad.

Best built-in summaries
Apple Intelligence in Safari
Nothing to install. Much less to configure. Also much less it tries to do.
On a supported Mac with Apple Intelligence enabled, Safari can summarize webpages and show Highlights on some pages. It is the simplest option here because it is part of the browser.
It is not a persistent multi-model sidebar and it does not provide AlliHat-style browser Agent Mode. But if all you need is an occasional summary, start with what Apple already shipped.
Choose it if: you mainly want quick summaries and your Mac supports Apple Intelligence.
They are strong browser assistants.
Anthropic and Google both offer official browser experiences that can understand pages and perform browser tasks.
