Get a Gemini API key.
Create a Gemini API key in Google AI Studio, then use it to ask about the page you are reading in Safari.
First, download AlliHat from the Mac App Store and turn it on in Safari. Already have it? You can start below.
Get your key from Google AI Studio.
- Open API Keys in Google AI Studio and sign in with your Google account.
- Use a key from your project, or choose Create API key. Pick a project when Google asks. If your existing project is missing, import it from the Projects page first.
- Copy the full key. You will paste it into AlliHat next.
Paste it into AlliHat.
- Open the three-dot menu in AlliHat, choose Model, then Gemini.
- Paste your key into the key field. AlliHat saves it automatically; you can also press Return. Look for API key saved!
- Go back to the page you were reading and ask a question.
"What are the main points of this page?"
What does it cost?
Google offers a free API tier for eligible models, with usage limits. Paid use needs billing set up for your project in AI Studio. Check Google's API billing guide for your options. AlliHat is $29.99/year after a 7-day free trial.
Having trouble?
If Google will not let you create a key, check your project permissions. If you hit a quota limit, check the project linked to that key in AI Studio. Newer Google keys can start with AQ; older ones can start with AIza. If AlliHat rejects an AQ key, update AlliHat from the Mac App Store.
To replace a saved key, select that provider under Model, then choose API Key in the three-dot menu.
A few common questions.
Where do I get a Gemini API key?
Use Google AI Studio's API Keys page. Each key belongs to a Google Cloud project.
Do I need a paid Gemini chat subscription?
No. AlliHat uses the Gemini API through AI Studio. Your API project has its own billing and usage limits.
