Get a Grok API key.
Use a key from xAI to chat with Grok beside your Safari page. Here is where to get it and where to paste it.
First, download AlliHat from the Mac App Store and turn it on in Safari. Already have it? You can start below.
Get your key from xAI.
- Sign in to the xAI Console.
- Add API credits to the account you want to use. Check the balance there before returning to AlliHat.
- Open API Keys, create a key named "AlliHat", and copy it. The key starts with xai-.
Paste it into AlliHat.
- Open the three-dot menu in AlliHat, choose Model, then Grok.
- Paste your key into the key field. AlliHat saves it automatically; you can also press Return. Look for API key saved!
- Go back to the page you were reading and ask a question.
"What should I know before buying this?"
What does it cost?
Grok API requests use your xAI API credits. Check the Console for your balance, usage, and current prices. AlliHat is $29.99/year after a 7-day free trial.
Having trouble?
If the key is rejected, check that you copied an xAI API key and selected Grok in AlliHat. If requests stop because of billing, check the API credit balance in the xAI Console.
To replace a saved key, select that provider under Model, then choose API Key in the three-dot menu.
A few common questions.
Is a Grok API key the same as my X password?
No. Create an API key in the xAI Console. Paste that key into AlliHat, not your X or Grok password.
Where do I manage Grok API usage?
Use the xAI Console for API credits, usage, and keys. AlliHat uses the API rather than your chat website session.
Still stuck?
Email nate+allihat@ninjasandrobots.com with what you tried and the message you saw. Leave your API key out of the email.
