Get a Perplexity API key.
Connect Perplexity to AlliHat with an API key, then ask questions while you browse. Start in the Perplexity API Console.
First, download AlliHat from the Mac App Store and turn it on in Safari. Already have it? You can start below.
Get your key from Perplexity.
- Sign in to the Perplexity API Console.
- Choose or create a project and set up API billing for it. This is where Perplexity tracks your API usage.
- Open API Keys and create a key. Name it "AlliHat" and copy it before leaving the page; the full key is only shown once.
Paste it into AlliHat.
- Open the three-dot menu in AlliHat, choose Model, then Perplexity.
- Paste your key into the key field. AlliHat saves it automatically; you can also press Return. Look for API key saved!
- Go back to the page you were reading and ask a question.

What does it cost?
Perplexity bills API use separately through your API project. Check Perplexity's billing help and your Console balance. AlliHat is $29.99/year after a 7-day free trial.
Having trouble?
If Perplexity rejects your key, make sure you copied the full key from the API Console. If you see a credit or quota error, check billing and limits for the project that owns the key.
To replace a saved key, select that provider under Model, then choose API Key in the three-dot menu.
A few common questions.
Do I paste my Perplexity password into AlliHat?
No. Use an API key from the Perplexity API Console. It is separate from signing in to the Perplexity chat website.
Can I use the same key on another Mac?
You can enter your key on another Mac, but requests share that key's project limits and billing. A separate key named for each Mac can make usage easier to follow.
